Clarification of the re-opened Grandparent route.
In 1997 the ‘Criteria for Registration’ as a professional member of ADMT UK were ratified by Council. Included in this document are the requirements to become a professional member of ADMT UK through a number of different routes, one of which is the ‘grandparent route’. The grandparent route was closed in September 2000, but has now been re-opened for a limited period of time, until ADMT UK professionals gain state registration through the Health Professions Council (HPC).
The grandparent route offers a means of registration for experienced practitioners of dance movement therapies who may not have graduated from a dance movement therapy post graduate training course, but who have engaged in significantly more than 700 hours of clinical practice. Typically, such candidates will have commenced clinical practice before graduate training programmes were available in the UK (1986), and completed a significant body of work before 1997.
To apply now through the grandparent route you need to fulfil all the requirements as laid out below for RDMT or SrDMT level of registration, and to provide evidence of long term clinical practice. Please note that if you intend to apply for RDMT through this route you must give evidence of how your experience and training covers criteria for RDMT. If you intend to apply SrDMT directly through this route, you must first give evidence of how your experience covers criteria for RDMT and then demonstrate separately how your additional experience is compatible with SrDMT level. The Professional Registration Committee can not be expected to count, calculate, or compare your hours. It is essential that you give clear evidence for each criterion.
For RDMT: Fill in the RDMT application form to cover all RDMT requirements. In addition complete a personal statement (criteria for personal statement enclosed with application form) to support your application, two references and your registration fee.
For SrDMT: Fill in the SrDMT application form AND fill in the extra pages to cover the RDMT Theory and Skills section, and submit with your clinical paper, two references and your registration fee.
Once your application is considered through the grandparent route, the outcomes are as follows:
- you will be awarded RDMT or SrDMT depending on which level of registration you have applied for
- you will asked to clarify, or add to your application prior to award
- in some cases you will be awarded RDMT instead of SrDMT, with an indication of areas for further experience
- you will not be awarded registration
Please ensure that you also read the full up to date criteria document on the website www.admt.org so that you have a sense of the context into which you are writing your application.
